Bubbles – Born in the USA

There’s always a reason to celebrate, like a birthday or Friday. And what better way to celebrate than with sparkling wine? But does it have to be Champagne? No. In fact, very good sparkling wines are made right here in the USA. Using the same method as Champagne, with the same grape varieties, but with a sense of place that is unique to the sparkling wine regions in this country. Fortunately, the 100% tariff on Champagne that was threatened has not come to pass – yet. But Champagne, while always pricey, is subject to the 25% tariff on French wine. So why not try some wines grown closer to home? 

Sparklers are produced in several places in the United States. The Willamette Valley in Oregon has a climate that favors Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the principal grapes in Champagne. Argyle Winery is one of the well-known producers there. The Anderson Valley in northern California, where Roederer Estate chose to make its home, also has a climate that produces outstanding sparkling wine grapes.  The valley brings the French style to Napa, especially in the Carneros appellation. That’s where you can find Chandon, another notable producer of sparkling wine. Or try Gloria Ferrer for a style that is lighter and fresher. Finally, New Mexico. New Mexico? Yes. The French Champagne house Gruet produces high quality sparkling wine in New Mexico at their family owned and operated winery.

A sparkling wine is a wonderful way to start a get together.  It’s a festive opener for a holiday meal, a perfect apéritif before dinner, or any time you feel like treating yourself to some bubbles. Try some of these  sparklers and enjoy the Champagne method with an American feel.
