Off the Beaten Path Wine Project

We are in a rut – most of us, most of the time – when it comes to selecting and drinking wine. We fall into the habit of drinking the popular wine varieties – Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and the like. For good reason: the wines are delicious, readily available, and well known.

When we choose these familiar wines, though, we overlook countless other wine varietals made from grape varieties that we have never heard of, or, if we have, we do not think to drink them. These grape varieties may include native or indigenous grapes from all over the wine-producing world. Some were nearly forgotten, or almost became extinct when grape growers pulled them up so that they could grow more well-known varieties to produce higher volume wines.

We want to expand our wine horizons. So we have embarked on a project to seek out and taste these off the beaten path wines made from these overlooked grape varieties. We’ll document that project here.
